I think all of us dream about carrying a bookshelf around with us. Not literally, of course, but something more like the Fairy Godmother in Cinderella-“Now where did I put that book? Oh! Here it is!” and then pulling the book you want out of the air. Or, to be even more impressive, pull out the wrong book, suddenly ‘realise’ that, and put it back to pull out another book, all out of thin air. All the books-none of the weight. A wonderful dream, isn’t it?

If only that could work. But this isn’t a fairy tale. So, though we can’t have an invisible library carried around at our disposal, why not carry one book around? Confession: I already do this. It’s very seldom you see me without at least my journal. And if you do see me without it, it’s probably in my purse. I usually have a book or two stuck in a book bag, or my purse, or the car. Never go anywhere without a book. I’ve learned this. It just brings disaster. If you have a book with you, everything will be alright. If you don’t. . . watch out.

And so, if you don’t like carrying books around (don’t say it makes you look strange. Just don’t. You can say geeky–that’s fine), why not add a little whimsy to your wardrobe, andย wear a book?

I love whimsical wardrobes. One of my favorite bloggers, The Clothes Horse, adds unexpected touches whenever she can, it seems: a watermelon slice-shaped purse that doubles as a cooler, a pair of eyes on the back of a trench coat, a straw boater hat or flower crown, or a ring with googly eyes. This isn’t quite as. . . noticeable. It’s merely a tribute to a fantastic book-and a cute necklace! ๐Ÿ˜‰

And-you can have your own!

Gandalf

Violet, who makes these lovely necklaces,ย has graciously made a special Hobbit necklace for one of my readers! I’d love to just ‘forget’ about the giveaway, and keep it myself, but ah, well–I have my Gatsby necklace.

  1. Seems to me that you might need a second necklace, Amalia… one for the magnifying glass with which to read the book.
I’ve been “carrying” a book around with me for years (ok, decades)- I used the Palm Pilot book reader. Sure, each page only held 100 words (versus 290 on a regular page), but whenever I got stuck in line, I could whip it out and stave off the anger and resentment of waiting for the poor customer service to afford me the ability to complete my task and depart.

    1. Roy, I actually do have a necklace that looks a little like a magnifying glass; I’ll have to wear them together! ๐Ÿ˜‰
I love carrying a book with me; it just solves so many problems!
